Searching for the Tree of Life by Tom Kalina

12 x 12 kiln-fired porcelain tile, 104 x 49 feet
SC Johnson Headquarters, Racine, Wisconsin

“Tom Kalina's painting depicts the landing in Brazil of the Sikorsky S-38 amphibian used by Herbert F. Johnson for his 1935 Carnauba Expedition. The successful journey was a search for a sustainable source of the wax-bearing Carnauba palm tree, identified by native Brazilians as the tree of life because of its legendary beneficial uses. It was instrumental in the growth of S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc.”
